Red Tomato Plants
Abe Lincoln
Red
This strain of Tomato originated in Northern Illinois back in 1923. It has a lot of fans here at our greenhouse, we usually sell out. Producing consistent clusters of 5-10 oz. bright red, fine tasting fruit. NOTE: I have gotten ahold of what is considered the "real" Abe Lincoln- a much larger fruit than the strain that is currently being grown. I will grow both for several years. Please let me know which strain interests you.

Abu Rawan
Red, determinate
This, like many other determinants, are excellent for those of you who like to can your harvest. Setting the majority of its fruit in a fairly short period, it is easier to plan your canning work. Abu Rawan has smallish medium sized, strongly flavored fruit, just right for processing or fresh eating. This one comes from Iraq which is why it tends to do very well in our high heat condition of the deep South. Strong production.

Ace 55
Red
This is one of those varieties that I was reminded in our big grow out just how good it is. Solid, thick walled with just the right amount of juice. The flavor, to me, is more on the mild side, unusual for a production Tomato. Not to sharp, not to bland..mellow. The size is pretty large...around 6-8 oz. with very good production. If you plant a long row of tomatoes for canning, this would be a super choice. It was developed and released in 1950 from UCLA.

Alaska Fancy
Red
Why on Earth would you want a Tomato named Alaska in Texas and Louisiana? Here is why! This is one of the fastest ripening Tomatos you can grow. You will get a ton of these little beauties long before the heat shuts down other long season types. No, they are not big..3 oz is typical but you will get a ton of them, really quick and you know what else? They are quite good! Not quite perfectly round, but mostly so. A great canner as well as a salad Tomato. As the years go by, Alaska Fancy continues to impress me. I notice in my garden, in addition to being early, it cranks out fruit late. Each year I reach a point where is am just sick of Tomatos. On some random day in July I drop the hammer on the whole field. Many of the varieties have played out by this time. As I am driving over (and enjoying the destruction!) I hit the group of Alaskas. I pause, note that they are STILL producing -and then pulverize them along with the others.

Anna Russian
Pinkish-red, indeterminate
This pretty, rather heart shaped large Tomato comes via Russia. Great Flavor, this delicious beauty will often come in at 1lb or more. Like a number of other varieties on my list, the foliage has a wispy look to it. You will often see this one mentioned as a "must have" among tomato people.

Andrew Raheart
Red
This is a big beefsteak Tomato..the ones you want for giant slices to slap on your sandwiches. Andrew can do that, and then some! Bright red, sweet and delicious, this one will perform for you. We intentionally do very minimal fertilizing or primping our plants- we want to see what "real" garden performance is- what you can expect if just average care is done. Well, Andrew cranked out plenty of 12-13 oz. perfect fruit. Well over a pound is common with this one if you baby it. We like Andrew. I need a better photo of this one for sure.

Atkinson
Red
Developed by Auburn University, this terrific plant can handle our heat without any problems! In our big grow outs, Atkinson cames out way on top. Seemingly endless clusters of huge (between 8oz and 1lb) perfect, almost blocky bright red fruit that are blemish free and great tasting. We also found Atkinson does very, very well as a Fall/Winter variety in our greenhouse. This variety holds its own against any hybrid. If you need a main crop dynamo, Atkinson will be a truly good choice. The photo is an example of horrid photography skills and a camera that was cutting edge in 1877. I will do better this upcoming season and finally ditch all the old photos on this site that make a perfectly beautiful tomato look like a gargoyle.

Barlow Jap
Pinkish red indeterminate
This is a delicious good sized tomato that has a kind of interesting background. The original seeds were smuggled out of Japan by a soldier during WW2. At some, point, this soldier gave them to a man named Roy Barlow in Shelbyville, Ky. Roy was a produce farmer and he continued this line as his main crop since it was so remarkably good! Many years later, his granddaughter Brita, who had continued saving these seeds, released them back to the world. How cool is that? Anyway, this is a dense, great flavored 1 pound tomato that is perfect as a slicer. Maybe after trying it, you, like Roy Barlow, will make it your main crop tomato!

Beef Master hybrid
Red
This terrific hybrid has a lot of fans out here with us, as well it should! Very large (1+ lbs are common) super good tasting red tomatos that really show vigor. Very strong disease resistance too. A real winner in the garden in all respects.

Beefsteak Super Improved
Red
Just like it sounds...an improved version of the classic Beefsteak. As I trial this variety, I will probably discontinue the old form. Never one to throw the baby out with the bath water, I will hang on to the old one for a few more seasons.

Better Boy Hybrid
Red
Like Big Boy, this hybrid has been around for a very long time. Different from Big Boy in that it is not a beefsteak type but instead a large (12 oz) smooth super heavy production style plant. Outstanding flavor, along with the ease of growth and almost sure-fire production, this hybrid has stood the test of time. Better Boy is a "go to" for many people as their main crop. In fact, I think this variety is the Guinness record holder for most production from a single plant. Impressive, huh?

Big Boy Hybrid
Red
If you ask anybody to name a Tomato, chances are this is the one they will mention- and for very good reason. One of the oldest continually produced hybrids, Big Boy never goes out of style. Since 1948, people have planted Big Boy for its dependable production of huge, bright red beefsteak style fruit. I have sold Big Boy for years. It is one of those "must haves" when you work in the greenhouse biz. Honestly, I was tired of growing and selling the plants. Same thing, year after year. I remember thinking as I watched customers walking away with their beloved Big Boys "Cant you try ANYTHING different?". Recently, we did a massive grow out of all our varieties. Grudgingly I planted Big Boy along with all the others. About all I have to say is I am ashamed of how I felt about Big Boy. Pretty much Big Boy punched me in the mouth for talking dirt about him. Man, what a great, huge Tomato.

Bloody Butcher
Red
You might expect that with a name like Bloody Butcher it would be some old time variety, but it is not. Intensely red, small to medium fruit borne in clusters will surprise you with its big flavor. It is also a very early variety that you can count on to land on your table before the others! Bloody Butcher also has the potato leaf trait which makes it kinda' unique looking in the garden. For me, the plants were somewhat restrained growing, not getting out of hand real quick. Quite popular!

Bobcat Hybrid
Red
Celebrity, watch your back...here comes Bobcat. Also a hybrid, Bobcat is every bit as good as Celebrity- maybe better. I like the flavor better and the fruit tends to be larger, prettier and earlier. Production is top-notch and the disease resistance is terrific. If you have been a long time Celebrity grower, give this Kitty a chance. You might become a convert. I certainly have.

Box Car Willy
Red
Willy was one of the early heritage tomatos that has been popular since the interest in old varieties got started. Good reason for this- it is an excellent Tomato! Disease tolerant, productive, crack-free with that old fashion flavor people remember. Very good sized at 12-to 18 oz., I think Willy is a good choice for a dip into the "heirloom" pool.

Bradley
Dark Pink almost red
An early 60's introduction from the University of Arkansas, Bradley will impress you with its near perfect sweet, tangy balance that people refer to as "old time" flavor. Good, strong growth well suited to the deep South, you will be impressed with the loads of 6-10 oz. deep pink beauties you will be picking. Great for canning too as it tends to set and ripen all at once.

Burbank Red
Red
This is a canner in my opinion. Smallish red fruit developed by Luther Burbank in 1915. Heavy production on a determinate plant. A lot of people like this one. I do not. After this season, I probably will not offer it anymore unless it gets its crap together and shines in my garden. Otherwise, it will get banished into my seed bank to languish forever!

Burgundy Traveler
Reddish Purple
Heat got you beat? Try Burgundy Traveler! Performing well in the South, this beauty should really be in your garden. Heavy production with an outstanding old fashioned flavor, this strong grower deserves to be tried by everybody. About 5-6 oz, it is great for both canning and fresh eating. A true all purpose Tomato. Some people have said this Tomato reminds them, flavor-wise, of Brandywine. To me, it has a bit more tang. I find it odd more people do not know about this variety- it is a true work horse, a total tomato machine.

Bush Steak Hybrid
Red
Bush type tomatos are part of a growing trend among growers. This is Burpees entry into this market. These typically will top out at 24 -30 inches making them quite manageable. A good choice for container growing if you want a big tomato. Nice, big red fruit with the usual good beef steak flavor and look.

Campbell's 33
Red determinate
I have, over the past few years, become intrigued with these old commercial varieties that have been discarded by the industry. Why? Because they seem to simply perform well under most conditions and produce a great crop of well colored and flavored fruit that is quite uniform. These are traits that us home gardeners value. This particular Campbells is no exception. Medium to large bright red fruit with a good flavor profile will most likely suit you. I resist typing "uu- uu- mmm good, uu-uu-mmm good, that's what Campbell's....." so I wont.

Caribe
Red
There are a handful of varieties that have yet to find their footing here on our list, I grow them each year but they get passed over for ones with fancier names or bigger, bolder fruit. This would be Caribe...poor little guy, nobody loves him- he just can't get any respect. Caribe is a little tomato cannon; he produces tons of very nice smallish (3.6 oz.) fruit with an excellent flavor of his bigger brothers. Makes an excellent little slicer for salads and a great size for canning. When canning, I like the ones I don't have to cut- just skin them, core them and drop them in a jar. Humidity and heat doesn't seem to bother Caribe. So, buy all them big 'ol fancy tomatoes...then tuck little Caribe in there- let him strut his stuff!

Cesare's Canestrino di Lucca
Red indeterminate
This is a very rare Italian paste type tomato. brought to the USA by Chef Cesare Casella from his hometown of Lucca, Italy. A deeply fluted and ruffled dry sauce tomato that is made for those of you who make your own products that require cooking down. This one has a very unique smell when fresh. Perhaps this translates to a special flavor when cooked down. That might explain why it has been handed down for so long in that region of Italy.

Celebration Hybrid
This tomato is a good candidate for people who grow Celebrity. Similar is most ways including growth habit and fruit size. Celebration, like Celebrity, is a hybrid so you can expect the same top performance in the garden. Some people feel the flavor is a notch better than Celebrity.

Celebrity Hybrid
Red
This Tomato is often considered the "gold standard" among home gardeners. A hybrid, this variety was developed and released in the early 80's for tough Texas growing conditions. It was so adaptable that its fame spread far and wide. Predictable, heavy production of 8oz. firm bright red fruit with good flavor along with strong disease resistance made it the perfect plant. This is one of the most popular varieties around.

What a weird/cool little tomato! Very flattened, deeply ribbed and strongly flavored. Just sorta fun to grow and look at. I like the flavor too! These aren't really big- maybe a tennis ball that has been squashed.

Charlie Chaplin
Red
I love Charlie! For some reason, people always pass this one over and I must change this! This is a charming little Tomato- it is often vaguely pear shaped about 4 oz or so with ruffles or pleats running lengthwise down the fruit. Basically, it fits perfectly in your hand. Now, to top it off, it has great flavor and sometimes outrageous production. I like Charlie when you slice it across its width and put it in a salad, the ruffles show very nicely- quite elegant in fact. It even does well as a Fall Tomato. Too bad I have the most awful photo of it. Just buy one, shut me up, ok?

Chef's Choice Red
The Chefs Choice series are a recently released group of hybrids designed for maximum performance and outstanding disease resistance. On top of that, the flavor has been a top priority in their development. This one, along with the other 8, are all AAS winners. The judges have been mighty impressed with these. I suspect our customers will be also. Large, bright red fruit are typically blemish free. This, along with the robust plant growth, will make this one a winner for you too.

Climbing Trip-L-Crop
Red
Ok, calling all super Tomato growers! Treat this monster correctly, and you will have a 25ft. freak show! This is the variety I have seen for years in the cheesy slick Newspaper adds, along with Blue Roses and other horticultural foolishness. Usually it is called "Italian Tree Tomato" or some such thing along with a photo of some dork with a bushel basket full of Tomatos on top of his shoulder while standing on a tall ladder.
Well, in a way, it is true but only if you are a dedicated gardener. Genetically, this variety is capable of growing to amazing lengths if you put the pedal to the metal and really fertilize and water etc. So, are you up for the challenge? If so, you will be rewarded with a ton of red, medium to large size, meaty fruit. Great if you are a canner. As a bonus (well, maybe not, but still cool) Trip-L-Crop has the Potato leaf trait. Makes it look a bit different from typical leaf varieties. Give it your best shot!

Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red
Ok, the name alone ought to get your attention! This deep red, heavy producing 6-10 oz. tomato was developed by Archie Millett and named by Gary Ibsen of Tomato fest in honor of Clints' participation in the Carmel Tomato Fest. The flavor is intense, and as Gary says, "not for sissies". Myself, I love that type of flavor- a perfect balance of sweet and acid. Really, in regards to flavor, that is what most of my customers ask for; it is what we associate with "old fashioned" flavor. This plant also has good disease resistance. As Clint said... "You've got to ask yourself a question: 'do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?" I think if you try one of these, you WILL be lucky!

Coustralle
Red
This big red ribbed heritage French variety was introduced in to the USA in 1992. Sometimes the fruit are absolutely huge- a 2 pound fruit is not out of the question. The vines too are large and leafy. Just a big ol, healthy plant. Now the flavor is something remarkable. You hear the term "old timey" when describing flavor. Coustralle would be a good example. Give a nod to the French and grow this one!

Cow's Tit
red indeterminate
.This is a big, rather heart shaped red with a, well, tit on the end. Wonder how it got its name? Must ponder this. Anyway, it is a pretty easy to grow and quite productive for its size. Flavor is good- more on the mild side to me. Kinda' cool looking.

Creole
This tomato has caused a great deal of confusion. Creole originally was the name for several different strains that were being grown down in South Louisiana back in the day. It was almost a brand rather than a specific variety. Then, in 1969, Louisiana State University released a tomato called Creole. It was resistant to many of the issues that plagued tomato growers in Louisiana, foremost being humid heat. I do not know what was used to develop that strain. Was it some of those "Creoles" being grown already? Was it something new? Who knows? It probably isn't all that important anymore. The strain I have seems to be the standard for modern Creole. A bright red, rather productive, medium sized fruit that seems to satisfy most palates. Many people here on the Texas/Louisiana border really like it.

De Barao
Red determinate
To heck with tired old Roma, try De Barao. These early producing Italian heritage tomatoes are just what your Marinara sauce call for! Richly flavored, these 4 oz paste tomatoes will impress you. De Barao will set big clusters all at once, making your canning duties a bit easier. Don't forget that though a paste tomato, these work superbly when chopped in salads. Not a lot of juice or seeds to dilute your dressings and flavors.

A true classic, this huge nearly perfect tomato has stood the test of time. If you are one of those type people who like to "baby" a plant (I am not) in order to get a massive fruit, this would be a great choice! A one pounder is common and a two pounder is not unheard of..

Doublerich
Red
Developed in 1953 by the University of North Dakota from a cross between a wild species and Michigan State Forcing. Bright flavored, deep red fruits contain a great deal more vitamin C than is typical of tomatos (hence the name Double Rich). Often times the fruit are in the one pound range, this strong growing plant should cover all bases for you! Has always been an easy grower for me.

Druzba
This is a hard working variety. Amongst all the other great reds, it holds its own. Many people think this is a wonderful variety and sing its praises. At about 4-5oz., it makes a great fresh eater and canning variety. I hate the photos I have taken of this one. They gross me out. I will have more appealing pictures for you this summer. I promise, it is much nicer than the photos suggest.

Early Red Chief
Red semi-determinate
This is a rather old variety that is not often grown. Med/Lrg red fruit are are produced in abundance. This one performed remarkably well for us this season; 2020 was the first year I had grown it. I thought "meh...another red...whatever". Well, as I was evaluating the new varieties, this one jumped out at me along with a couple other new reds. Very attractive, blemish free bright red fruit on a well behaved vine. I could see this one becoming quite popular. You might consider giving this one a shot against your normal selection of red; I suspect you might really like it.

Early Pick Hybrid
Red
This one is a pretty typical early hybrid, also from Burpee. Medium sized fruit will sometimes go much larger. I find the size somewhat variable. Typical flavor with decent disease resistance. This is a great one to add to a mix of varieties in the garden. I do not find the earliness to be remarkable but it is a good, solid performer.

Glamour
Red
I haven't offered Glamour for a few years. No good reason, just have to pick and choose what I grow out for you folks. Sometimes it is a very random decision. Anyway, Glamour is a great tomato. Good sized at 6-7 oz., these clusters of fruit will make you raise your eyebrows at the great production. A good choice for canning and fresh eating. The bright, fresh flavor will satisfy you.

red indeterminate
Granny Cantrell has a huge following. Very large 1+ pound fruit that are somewhat oblate have what is often considered as a perfect flavor. Has been grown since prior to WW2. I have grown Granny for some years and always enjoy it.

Hayslip
Red
This unassuming red canning/fresh eating Tomato is very rarely offered anywhere. Smallish red crack resistant fruit is just the right size for canning. Like its name, nuthin' fancy, just a good little workhorse, lots and lots of perfect red globes of yum. . Flavor is balanced and quite good. Awww...come on. Give little Hayslip a whirl in your garden. He belongs to the "nobody loves me" club. I think he is developing a inferiority complex that he does not deserve. Poor baby.....

Heinz 1370
Red
This productive red is an excellent choice for people who process their harvest. 1370 is a very meaty fruit that is not overly juicy- that is exactly what is was designed for. Less juice means less cooking down time and when doing a lot of standard canning such as I do, I appreciate the more tomato, less juice factor. Don't assume this is not a good fresh use tomato. It is terrific in salads for these same reasons. It has a very good flavor!

Heinz H9129
Another of the group of tomatoes developed for the canning industry back in the day. What makes these, as a group, so great are a couple things.
First, they tend to be easy to grow, usually they are determinate- tall, rangy vines are not going to cut it out in the field. Secondly, as a rule they produce bright red, blemish free fruit all within a short period; just what is needed for the canning industry- and the home canner! The third thing I find with this group is a bright, intense flavor. Having a mild or bland flavor would be counterproductive if you were processing with heat. This Heinze selection meets all these criteria. So, if you are a master canner- give this one a shot. Also, this is not a one trick pony! They are great fresh too!

Heinz VF
Red determinate
Old Heinz variety that woks very well for canning because it, like all determinants, set all its fruit at the same time. Bright red, 6-8 oz fruit with a good, strong flavor.

Homestead
Red
This is another of those tried and true varieties that has been around for a long time and is a trouper. One of its big positives is the fact that it does well in hot humid condition- well suited to Southern growing. Largish fruit (6oz-often much larger) that come on all at once make this a superior canning variety. As a slicer, it is great too. Homestead has performed very well for us. Traditional Tomato flavor and color.

Irish Cream (multiple synonyms )
Unlike any other tomato, Irish Cream is for those of you who are intrigued by things out of the realm of ordinary such as I am. What makes this plant different? It is variegated! The whole plants is splashed with spots and stripes of white! Yes...can you imagine? I think it is quite beautiful. When people come out to the greenhouses and see flats of these young plants, they always smugly "inform" me that my plants are obviously sick with all those white splashes on the leaves. Since I detest know-it-all people (because there can only be one, ME!) I enjoy giving them a verbal beat-down and informing them that it is a genetic trait. Anyway, I just love this one. Here is the scoop on the best way to grow it. Unlike the traditional advice I give regarding Sun, this one prefers some shade. If you can give it morning Sun and then let it drop into shade all afternoon, the color will be much prettier in the foliage. Think of the white tissue in the leaves as albino (which it technically is). It hasn't any protection from the Sun. I have grown this variety in full sun, it does fine but starts to look a bit rough early on. This might be a fun one for a patio- where Sun situations are not great. You can also truly enjoy the unique foliage up close. Now, this IS a tomato, right? Well guess what? It is actually delicious! Smallish sized with a pronounced old fashion flavor. You will also notice the unripe fruit has a distinct variegated pattern on the skin. It disappears as the fruit turns red but interesting nonetheless.

Jersey Breeze
Red
New Jersey has a long history of tomato production. The truck farming industry in the state has been responsible for the introduction of many great varieties over the years. Jersey Breeze is an example of this. This one will crank out high quantities of excellent quality, fine flavored fruit. Coming in at around 10 oz., you will find this a great size for most applications. High disease resistance along with a tough constitution, Jersey Breeze will be a ....oh gosh, I HAVE to say it.....BREEZE to grow in your garden. Simply outstanding!

Jersey Devil
RED
Once very popular, now getting attention again, Jersey Devil is unique. I guess you would classify it as a paste type only cooler! About 6 inches long, the fruit will be pointed, plump and almost twisted! Thick fleshed, they are perfect for those of you who like to make sauce and can up a load or two. Very productive and vigorous plant. Great flavor makes them wonderful for fresh eating too!

Jetstar Hybrid
Red
I like Jet Star. It dropped of my list for a couple years due to me forgetting to order seed; a poor excuse indeed. This hybrid has been around for a long time and has a big fan base. I am one of them. Back when I was a wee-slip-of-a-lad (pretty sure Dinosaurs roamed the Earth then) Jet Star was the first hybrid tomato I planted. I was so dumb back then that I thought the clouds of White Flies coming off the plants were so neat! Yeah... White Flies. Ugh. Never mind.
Anyway, this one is a trouper and will always give you a good crop of medium sized well flavored tomatoes with out a lot of fuss. I can't think of anything I don't like about Jetstar. A good slicer, good canner- all purpose.

KC-146
I got ahold of this seed and was rather interested to see what would come of it. This variety was developed by the Campbell's Soup company in 1956 for their processing needs. It has since been replaced by newer varieties but it still survives in home gardens today and now, after growing it, I see why. This was a great little tomato! It pumped lots and lots of perfect 5-6 oz bright red fruit that is terrific for canning. It has a superb flavor also. In my mind, it is a good dual purpose variety. Plants were determinate so not huge and rangy- very well behaved. Maybe you ought to give it a try if you are a big canner.

Big red, productive easy to grow tomato from.....drum-roll....Hawaii! I was quite taken with this one last year. It just did its thing, cranking out plenty of very perfect fruit that had a fine flavor! Needless to say, heat and humidity were what it was bred for and here in Texas, we have plenty of that for sure. In the Ocean of Red varieties available, you might give this one some serious consideration.

Livingston's Beauty
Pinkish red
This old-timer might be a nice addition to your garden. Medium to large fruited, these deep pink, nearly red fruit are mostly smooth and show a bit of ribbing. The flavor is top-flight. Introduced by A.W. Livingston in 1886, he is often considered the father of modern tomatos.

Ok, this is a weird-ass one. The plant carries the gene that changes the color of the foliage from the normal deep green to a strange pale yellowish chartreuse shade. This may disturb you traditionalist out there but for the seekers of unique like me, it can be very interesting. Also weird is the way it ripens. It will go through a series of colors to get to red rather than the usual green-white-red like most reds do. You will see a series of yellow colors too. Yeah, a total novelty but what the heck, you only live once.

A Southern tomato from yesteryear, us folks in Dixie ought to be growing it more often. Heat and humidity tolerant, this 1918 introduction was a cross of an early production variety and a very root disease resistant one. The result was great scarlett red, disease resistant production tomato that could handle the problems of deep South growing conditions. The size is a solid medium but often times going to large.

Marglobe
Red
Any long time Tomato gardener will recognize Marglobe. It has been around forever and a day- with good reason. Large 8 plus oz. bright red fruit, heavy production and a good, old fashioned Tomato flavor keep this strain popular with home gardeners. Marglobe is a terrific choice for canners because it is a determinate plant...most of the fruit will ripen in a very short period of time. In addition, determinate plants are typically not very large. If you have never tried Marglobe, give it a shot- see why it remains so popular after all these years!

This is a very rare strain. Quite large, ribbed beefsteak style fruit. Often there will be some orangish coloration on the shoulders though overall it is deep red. You can figure on a lot of one pound fruits, sometimes larger. Fruits are very thin skinned and delicate with a rich, full bodied flavor. I haven't ever seen this one offered for sale anywhere. One thing I have noticed is due to the fact it is such a delicate fruited variety, don't hesitate to pick it a bit early and just let it finish ripening inside.

This one has always done well for me. It was bred by Clemson University in South Carolina to withstand some of the common problems in the South. This is a good, solid performer. If you are a canner and need lots of tomatos, choose this one. A long row will keep you quite busy putting up the medium sized, scarlet red fruit. Nice bright flavor too!

Martian Giant
Red, semi determinate
With a name like Martian Giant, you would expect some weird green thing! Instead, it is an outstanding big red! This one will come in at around 12+ ounce putting it on the quite large side. Flavor is top-flight and being a semi-determinate, the growth will be more restrained, sort of like Celebrity. I heard the way it got its name was that the flavor is out of this world! Guess that makes sense. One thing I will say is that it would be a top contender as a main crop red for me. I was really impressed with this one, flavor, beauty and size -the Martian seems to have it all!

Red determinate
This is a Chinese strain that has done quite well for us. It is more of a bush type, with restrained growth. In addition, being a determinate, most of the fruit will ripen nearly all at once, making it an excellent candidate for canning. As a fresh use tomato, it is very good too. Fruit is about 4-5 oz. medium sized. The flavor is balanced and traditional. Though never a popular seller for me, I continue (for many years) to grow it because it is just a good, solid performer. It is getting very rare to find the seed for this one anymore, at least in the U.S.A.

Mt. Pride
Red
Ok, this one is one of the best we grow in its class. A hybrid, this one just rocks. Huge harvest of blocky medium/large clusters of fruit. Often I have a hard time convincing people to try it. I think the name is the reason for this; the term "mountain" just does not sound like something we should grow in the deep South. It is actually part of a series of Tomatos from the same breeder- all of which have the word Mountain in it. Believe me, when I do get a hard-core Celebrity grower to try it, they ALWAYS return the following year for them. If you need a super production variety with everything going for it, try this one. Of course, the flavor is great.

Mule Team

I like Mule Team. I like the name. I like the way it grows. I like the flavor. Can you tell I like it? Really, this old timer should be tried in your garden. It has a lot going for it. Big, bright red fruit (12 oz average in our trials) and strong, problem free growth makes it a super choice for people who like a traditional Tomato. I could easily see a person planting a whole row of these.

Omar's Lebanese
pinkish red
This is a nice BIG tomato if you grow it well. Omar has been getting a fair amount of attention the past few years. It is very good! It has a rather complex flavor that many people enjoy, myself included. Often listed as a pink variety, it always seems more red to me- as a color blind man, take that as you will. The fruit is often rather ribbed rather than smooth, pretty much a beef steak type.

Opalka
Red
Another one from Poland- in fact, its synonym is "Polish Torpedo" which I kind of like lol. Anyway, Opalka is technically a paste type fruit but the flavor is so good you can use it any way you like. Can it, dice it, slice it...its all good. These fruit are longer than a typical Roma type, around 5, sometime 6 inches. You will notice the plants have a peculiar wispy type foliage. I have encountered this type foliage on a handful of other varieties we grow. Not a big plant. It is a darling of the tomato arty-farty people who write magazine articles (rolling eyes).

Oregon Star
Red
Here is something a bit unique. The first few waves of fruit are often seedless! How cool is that? A modern tomato introduced in 1993 by Dr. J. Baggett who, along with the university of Oregon, has introduced a number of great varieties. This is a great production tomato for canners and people who like to cook down their tomatos. Large sized through most of the season, these slightly irregular shaped tomatos will give you a lot of bang for your buck.

Park's Legacy hybrid
In 2018, in honor of their 150th anniversary, Park's released this power-pack tomato. Legacy has a remarkable series of built in disease resistance that we all will appreciate. At 8+ ounces, this is a good sized tomato with outstanding flavor. This might be a fine choice for people who have had some difficulty growing tomatos. Park's knows tomatos; the fact that they created this one in their own honor say something. Put this one up against your tried and true variety. See if Park's hit it out of the ball park with this one.

Plate de Hati
Red indeterminate
Hey, historians! This is one of the oldest cultivated varieties you are likely to encounter. This is a brilliant red, small tomato with big flavor. Plate du Hati is documented in 1561. More of a sauce tomato simply because of its size. Hard to believe this tomato has been around long before most people of the world would even consider eating a tomato- if they had ever even heard of them! Makes all those "heirloom" tomatoes seem like new born babies!

Porter
Red
First introduced in 1914, Porter was developed in Stephanville, Texas by V. O. Porter to withstand the awful Texas growing conditions. He succeeded considering this variety is still going strong after all these years. I have decided Porter is total crap. If you want these, let me know early on and i will custom seed them for you. Some years they have been good for me but this year, it got the award for worst of the worst. Once THAT happens, buh-bye. We had a good growing season this year- Porter rewarded me with horrid little fruit with the texture of wallboard and the flavor of a carpet that an old dog has slept on for years. Seems I have seen an improved form of this variety. I might purchase some seed and see if it is better. Certainly wouldn't take much in my opinion.

Porterhouse Hybrid
Yeah, the name is a bit obvious....Porterhouse...steak...beefsteak....duh. You know what? This is a REALLY nice plant. Sometimes the term "beefsteak" is a bit over used. I have grown many varieties that seemed to have very little beefsteak qualities to them (huge, goofy looking fruit) though the breeders attach the term to them. Porterhouse is the real deal, much like Big Boy. I am impressed with the overall vigor of this variety. Of course, the flavor is terrific. So, if you like the big ones for massive slices, give Porterhouse a try.

Quarter Century
Red
This 1906 Burpee introduction might be a very satisfying one to grow in your garden. Hard to believe so many of these old-time tomatoes are still floating around after all these years. Anyway, this even-flavored bright red beauty will reward your efforts with plenty of fruit that are born on very compact, easy growing plants. A good, solid tomato. This one is most likely classified as a dwarf plant. It would be an excellent choice for container growing!

Red Brandymaster Hybrid
Red
For those of you who have grown and failed with Brandywine (that would be a lot of you), Red Brandymaster could be a good choice to try. This is a hybrid form of Bandywine will give you the flavor of Brandywine without the problems of the old open pollinated strain. Very large, meaty pinkish red with typical hybrid production and the famous flavor everyone talks about.

Red Brandywine
Red
There are 3 basic strains of Brandywine tomato going around. The traditional Pink (which I think is a terrible tomato for the South) with potato leaves, another pink and then the Red. Red is not as big or as sweet and typically has the traditional leaves. It does, however, have the complex flavor that people rave about. The red one seems to do better in the South also. Plants are large and vigorous. If you have failed with Brandywine (that would be most of us) try this red strain.

Redfield Beauty
I purchased seed for this variety along with several other old time, red varieties that did not have any cutesy names or hipsters fawning over it in home-living type magazines. You know what? They all performed wonderfully. Redfield was no exception. This easy to grow variety gets good sized if well cared for- both the plant and the fruit. Flavor is old fashioned if that means much. Mostly well balanced and pleasant. Production was excellent too. Redfield is actually a variety that was selected out of a field of Livingstons' Beauty in 1885 -itself a rather famous tomato due to the fact of its breeder, A.W. Livingston, is often considered the father of modern tomatos. BTW...Redfield is often termed a pink variety. To my color blind eye, it is more red so I group it with the reds.

Red Peach
Red determinate
A very old (1800's) Russian variety that might intrigue you. On the smaller side, these quite flavorful fruit are slightly fuzzy! Whenever you see the word "peach" attached to the name, you can make this assumption. I know it sounds gross but it is NOT like a real peach! I can not eat a fresh peach without it having first been peeled. The fuzz makes me feel like I am eating a hairbrush and I have the urge to wretch. With tomatoes, this trait is nothing more than a novelty. The fuzz is barely there and just rubs off. Mostly, to me, it is noticeable only while on the plant. Once you pick them it sort of just disappears when you throw them in your basket. Anyway, this is a very delicate variety. Just munch them while walking around the garden like I do.

Rio Grande
Red
Oval paste type tomato, Rio is similar to Roma except larger and better flavored. If you like Roma, try Rio as your main crop for processing- it out produces Roma hands down. You might like it much better! Quite good as a fresh tomato too. Because Rio is simply so much better than Roma, you might make this your main crop caner if you prefer paste style Tomatoes. I have found it less prone to blossom end rot which plagues me with Roma.

Rose de Summer

This large size red/pink Tomato will knock you out with how juicy it is. Thin skinned and tender, it makes a nice addition to a salad and, of course, your fresh off the grill hamburger. This is a Potato leaf type that should impress you. Every year it seems this variety will produce the highest number of very large fruit per plant. I also notice that though a beefsteak type, the fruits are not terribly misshapen; just big, kinda ribbed and broad but not real deep. A satisfying variety to grow. Gosh, could my hands be any dirtier in this photo? Yuck.

Rosso-Sicillian
Red
Like Zapotec, this is a very pleated bright red and hugely productive. Difference is that Zapotec is more pinkish than Rosso. You will have loads of these unusual beauties. What is most fun is when you slice them across the width, producing amazingly shaped rings that will certainly be commented on for their distinct look. They are also sort of hollow so with a quick scoop using your finger, you can have an excellent stuffer! The flavor is big..very Itallian!

Rutgers

Like Ace 55, Marglobe and Homestead, Rutgers, in our grow outs, reminded me just why it is still so popular after many years. I happened to notice a group of plants that were loaded with deep red clusters of medium/large size fruit. Lenny said it was Rutgers. I do not know why I was so surprised. I went over and looked closely and then tasted them. Terrific. This, along with Ace, are classic farmers market Tomatos. BTW...I believe there are two distinct strain of Rutgers going around. One is determinate and one is indeterminate. The indeterminate, which I grow, is superior in my opinion.

San Marzano
Red indeterminate
A classic paste/canning type of Italian origin. Better and bigger than Roma in my opinion. San Marzano gets a lot of love from tomato growers. Why? because it is actually an indeterminate grower which is sort of unusual for a paste type tomato and equates to a longer, more boutiful harvest. In addition to that, the flavor is very balanced and more juicy than a typical paste. Many people, myself included, like this one chopped in a salad.

Sekai Ichi

How about an outstanding Japanese Tomato that will knock your socks off? Big in every way, this beauty will keep you busy picking huge loads of amazingly great flavored red fruit. This variety is a real work-horse. If you have room for only one tomato, give this one a try. Its heavy production and old fashioned flavor would certainly merit a place in your garden. A winner for sure!

Silver Fir Tree
Red determinate
Darn! I cant believe I forgot to get a photo of this one! What a cool plant! Not a big plant at all, with its weird lacy foliage it is right at home on the patio. I often see tomatos in hanging baskets being sold at garden centers; a total gross-out if you ask me. What an ugly nasty plant to have hanging around. And then there is Silver Fir Tree. Such a delicate beauty, I think it would be quite lovely in a hanging basket- for a tomato, anyway. And, if that were not enough, the fruit is delicious. Brightly flavored and on the small side. I am just so intrigued with this one. It has been around since the early 90's when it arrived from Russia but it never seems to be sold anywhere. Silver Fir Tree would be a lovely in a pot on your patio. This is an example of the carrot leaf gene that is quite rare in tomatos.

Southern Nights
Deep Maroon
With its beautiful coloring and great, balanced, true tomato flavor, this strong grower deserves a place in your garden. We have been impressed with the volume of production on this one. Lots and lots of 5-10 oz. fruit.

St. Piere
Red, determinate
This is a sweet, highly flavored Tomato of French origins. This mid-sized fruit is the perfect slicer and very productive not to mention easy as pie to grow- it does well for me without any special care. Also, this is a great size for canning. This might be a fun one for you traditionalist...something, well, French!

This is a typical hybrid beef steak tomato growing on a more compact plant. It does the job very, very well. Plenty of old fashioned flavored very large sized fruit. Big Boy growers might like this one a lot.

Red indeterminate (AKA Curl)
Super freak-show alert! Those of you who know me know that I dig the weird stuff! This one takes the prize. Picture a thick stem with very few branches. Now, instead of graceful leaves, make them tight and very puckered clustered right up at the stem. This delightful mutation might appal some traditionalist but oh what fun this one is to show off! Grow it in a container on your patio and it will be a real conversation starter. Fruit is on the smaller side- 3 inches or so and red. Flavor is typical tomato. You will absolutely have to stake this one. It first appeared for sale in 1956. Too bad it has such a stupid name.

Super Sioux

This is a good variety for us in the South. It seems to produce in spite of our often hot, dry Summers. About medium size, the brightly colored fruit has a balanced, leaning towards acid flavor that makes it an excellent choice for canning. This is a good main crop choice.

Super Steak Hybrid

Yeah, I know. I have too many big red hybrids. I creates the paradox of choice- just too many and it gets overwhelming. I will eventually pare down the list but for now....this is a great one. Really big fruit- often two pounds under optimal conditions. Hybrid forms of beef steak tomatos out perform the open pollinated types as a rule and have greater disease resistance. Great flavor on this one too. Win/win if you ask me.

Tasmanian Chocolate dwarf
Reddish Brown
This one took me by surprise. Why? I did not realize when I bought the seed that it was part of the dwarf tomato project. I am ashamed to say that I thought it was a cherry type! Sometimes it pays to read seed descriptions a bit better. Duh!
Well, as I patiently waited for little chocolate colored fruit I noticed what a dense, thrifty looking group of plants they were. Deep green, short with thick foliage. I did not even need to waste the tall posts I had them staked with. Then, those little cherry fruits started to grow...and grow and grow some more. What?!? I got ripped off by the seed vendor! I went back and check the listing and actually READ the whole description. What a dim-bulb I can be. What I had was an outstanding variety that as I recall, was developed in Australia (oh yeah, Tasmania...duh AGAIN!).
What a terrific screw up! I loved it! These deep brown/red slightly flattened fruit were just great AND this is a great choice for container growing. I recommend Tasmanian Chocolate for anybody who has space restraints and want to try something a bit different. I am going to be looking into the dwarf tomato project for further varieties. Maybe even this year. Stay tuned folks.... (update..I did it! Made a big investment in the new dwarf series for you folks, think we will all love them).

Ten Fingers of Naples

This is a terrific paste type that has impressed us quite a bit. Setting clusters of 3oz. fruit about 4 inches long, it makes Roma look like a weakling. It has more substance than Roma too, giving sauce more body with less cooking down. Flavor is good for fresh eating too! Production and growth are outstanding. My tomato growing daughter Rachel loves this one.

Thessaloniki
Red
I like this one. Strong, bright Tomato flavor is what I think of when Thessaloniki comes to mind. A Greek Tomato that has been around in the USA since the 50's. Has about average weight of 5-6 oz and bright red fruit. You should not have any issues with this one. It is very well regarded among tomato growers.

Traveler Tomato (syn: Reisetomate, Voyage)
Red
Ok, here we go...the weirdest, funnest tomato I have grown. What a funky fun little mess this is! The name, from what I understand, comes from the fact that you can actually break the segments away from the fruit and people used to carry them in their pockets. You really can! Each segment breaks away rather easily but will not leave a goopy mess like what you would expect. I loved picking them.
I had read that they were flavored like crap. How very wrong! I found them to be very rich and tangy- delicious in fact!
This plant, I believe, is probably a slightly different species from garden tomatos- much like the class of Currant tomatos. I say this due to the way it grows- its foliage and its soft, rampant growth. I noticed the difference immediately upon germination. Another interesting thing I noticed was that when this plant is done for the season, it is DONE! It just falls over dead- no lingering in the twilight zone like so many other varieties.
I have to say, if you want to be a show off in your garden, try this one. If you have kids, they should be amused (and maybe horrified). Two thumbs up from me.

Trophy

An 1870 introduction, it has a cutesy story behind it that I am to lazy to tell. You can look it up, rather interesting. Anyway, Trophy is a good, all purpose Tomato that sets in clusters. We usually see them come in at about 6 -12 oz.- they are bright red and usually a bit on the sweet side.

Developed by the University of Florida, this high heat and humidity variety might be worth your while. Good foliage cover helps alleviate sun scald- a problem for us in the Sun belt. You will find this a very versatile tomato. The thick walled fruit are not as delicate as many garden varieties . This helps to keep cracking and splitting to a minimum. Many of the University of Florida varieties are able to pollinate at high temps- extending the harvest period. I always forget to check on this each year. The fruit is about 8 oz...good sized with a rather sweet flavor.

This is an old Jung Seed Co. strain that was pretty much synonymous with Jung. This has been a very good grower for us- healthy and productive. Most of the fruit averaged around 5 oz. Flavor is on the tangy side, very juicy and good as a slicer! This would also make a terrific canning Tomato. Fairly early among others in its class and a good looking, all around performer.

Wisconsin 55
Red, determinate
An excellent work-horse of a Tomato, developed at the University of Wisconsin back in the 1940's.
A terrific choice for canning and fresh eating. A good sized fruit (around 6-7 oz.) and generally crack-free skin make it easy to grow. Really, this is just a solid, all purpose bright red with great flavor. Seems these varieties with dull, uninteresting names are easy to overlook. That's a shame since often they are really tomato beasts!

How about a real work-horse, all purpose tomato? Developed and released in 1957 by the University of Wisconsin, this medium sized light red tomato will give you a ton of canners, slicers, whatever you want them for. The best part is that they are a very tasty tomato- I mean truly tasty. Odd that it was bred as a canner but has found lasting fame as a slicer.

Zapotec Pleated
Red/pinkish
This one is just a trip! Deeply pleated with a great flavor, it is just plain fun to grow. The flavor is very good- mild and well balanced with a true Tomato flavor. In addition, Zapotec is very juicy and meaty. The fun begins when you slice it across its width. Wait until you see these Tomato "Flowers" laying atop your salad! No two are exactly alike. Often very good sized- ours average about 1 lb.
