Pingtung Long
I am a fan of the Asian class of eggplant. I like all of them. Why? Because I love eggplant breaded and pan fried in butter. The Asians are roughly the same size the whole length of the fruit giving you nice crispy perfect sized slices without tons of seeds. Pingtung gives you even more! These babies can get long! 15-20 inches are not uncommon. If staked, they are rather straight. If they touch the ground they will begin to kind of curl and make unique shapes. I also find the color of this variety appealing- light violet purple to my color-blind eye. Reminds me of Easter. Anyway, Pingtung is a winner for me for another reason. All eggplant are tough. Probably the last thing to die in the garden. I have mowed Pingtung off midseason and had it come right back and make a crop in late summer. This one is tough...and then some.
